"Teen Punk Fuckin Stuff"

I'm sort of a Thurston Moore nut, so I'll give anything on his imprint a try. Be Your Own Pet is something special—a no-frills punk band that speaks to the angry 13-year-old that never got satiated. I’m a sucker for a solid frontwoman, and Jemina Pearl fits the bill—a good strong voice, sweet moves, and an I-could-give-a-fuck attitude. She's dripping with charisma, so much so that you'll get sassy by osmosis. It’s the sort of stuff that makes me smile mischeiviously and forward the link on to friends when I’m not screaming along and dancing my ass off.

“Becky” is what currently has me hooked. It’s steeped in satire and so deliciously snarky and evil. It’s got that early 60’s girl group sway—the perfect contrast to Jemina’s narrative about losing a BFF and meeting later with knives in hand after class. There’s been a bit of controversy/hype surrounding the song and it’s violent nature in regards to their record company, who asked them to change the lyrics or take the song off the album. BYOP decided to drop the song and release it seperately. So sad because the song is infectiously killer (I guess Universal finds Emenem less threatening?) and fun.

It would be the perfect song to serenade a Smog City Roller Girls event. Do yourself a favor and listen at their myspace page.

And here's some Be Your Own Pet live:
